About Us

Wawota is a picturesque community of 520 friendly people located on Highway #48, 16 miles northeast of Moose Mountain Provincial Park. It's name is derived from an Indian word meaning "deep snow".

The Town is situated on the edge of the Little Pipestone Valley, which is a natural recreation area, currently utilized for nature trails and hiking in the summer. In winter it is popular for tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. This area is also a natural amphitheater which has been used for concerts, as well as the R.C.M.P. Musical Ride.

We are a prosperous community with a health centre, with doctor service provided by the Moosomin doctors , a 30 bed special care home and an ambulance service. We have a large number of businesses to serve a wide variety of needs. There is a municipal building complex housing the offices of the Town and the Rural Municipalities of Walpole #92 and Wawken #93, as well as the library, fire truck, ambulance and handi van.

Our community is also known for it's sporting and cultural events, such as various hockey and ball tournaments. We have many groups that support the various activities in the Town, including the Wawota & District Lions Club, the Wawota Legion and the Hints of Harmony. We also have a number of church groups which donate their time to support each of our three local churches.

Wawota is a fine example of it's motto, "What you're looking for!". With the devastating loss of the railroad over 30 years ago, it could well have become a ghost town. Instead, with the determination of it's residents, it has grown to be an active and progressive community and a recognized contributor to the growth and history of our area.
